TITLE

Assistant Dean of Students and Director, Civility & Community Standards

JOB SUMMARY

The Assistant Dean of Students and Director of OCCS is responsible for the implementation and exercise of planning, organizing, integration and completion of TWU's student disciplinary processes including academic integrity, behavioral misconduct, and sexual misconduct. The Director will exercise leadership and management responsibility for the areas of community standards, Title IX, Title VI, ADA (for students) and the Student Code of Conduct. In addition, the Assistant Dean of Students and Director of OCCS serves as the lead in the training, advisement, and education of students, faculty, staff, and administrators with regard to the Student Code of Conduct, student rights and responsibilities, hazing, sexual misconduct and other community standards. In addition, the Assistant Dean of Students serves as secondary support for all Dean of Students specific functions such as BAT/SOC committees, Student Withdrawals and Student complaints. Work is performed under minimal supervision with evaluation based on the effective operation of the administrative function. The performance evaluation is conducted through the performance evaluation system and in accordance with the University Policies & Procedures.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to: Assistant Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students

Supervises: Associate Director, Civility & Community Standards/Civil Rights Investigator, Business Manager, and Student Services Legal Advisor

ESSENTIAL DUTIES - May include, but not limited to the following:

  1. Facilitates the Student Code of Conduct, Title IX, Title VI, and ADA investigations, adjudication, & resolution processes and/or hearings.
  2. Serves as the Institution's Title IX Coordinator.
  3. Interprets, develops, and promotes University policies and procedures in compliance with TWU Policies, Rules and Regulations, local, state, and federal laws.
  4. Oversees investigation and adjudication of student academic and non-academic cases when applicable, aids students in conflict resolution.
  5. Serves as an administrative hearing officer in formal conduct hearings.
  6. Oversees management of the community standards database (Maxient) across multiple campus departments
  7. Identifies, evaluates, and reports campus and national trends in student discipline, community standards and civility.
  8. Works collaboratively with departments to implement effective responses to campus and national trends in student conduct and civility in an effort to meet the needs of students.
  9. Responsible for the coordination of on-going educational services and programming related to conduct or community standards, Title IX/sexual misconduct, hazing, etc., including, but not limited to, presentations, conflict resolution training, departmental training, academic leadership training, graduate assistant training, and new student orientation.
  10. Reviews and approves documentation and marketing related to the needs specific to assigned area(s).
  11. Serves as a liaison for departmental matters between department and TWU Police Department, University Housing, Special Events, Athletics, Academic Affairs, Compliance, Title IX, Student Life and others as appropriate.
  12. Serves as a departmental resource for the wellbeing of students, including assistance with the BAT team and the SOC team.
  13. Oversees departmental assessment and strategic planning.
  14. Oversees University free speech policies and procedures.
  15. Participates and represents the University in various committees, professional trainings, and industry conferences.
  16. Maintains records and services to assure compliance with appropriate state and federal regulations, including the hazing website, the biennial drug/alcohol report, FERPA, etc.
  17. Collaborates with housing personnel in addressing resident students' behavior, including the development of educational programming.
  18. Supervises TWU Student Legal Services office.
  19. Responsible for establishing job standards, goal setting, and continuing education opportunities for subordinate staff and effectively evaluating staff under charge. The performance evaluation is conducted through the performance evaluation system and in accordance with the University Policies & Procedures.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Effectively utilizes technology to provide student services and information to students.
  • Plans, coordinates, and hosts informational events for student recruitment and retention.
  • Performs other duties as requested.

EDUCATION

Master's degree in a job-related field of study. Juris Doctor (JD) or terminal degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE

Five years of experience in higher education. Demonstrated experience in assessment, strategic planning, and managing in an educational setting. A high-level understanding of national trends and current best practices in student conduct administration and Title IX. Experience utilizing Maxient software is preferred and helpful though not required.

REQUIREMENT

Regular and reliable attendance at the University during regular scheduled days and work hours is an essential function of this position.

  5. Ability to apply budgetary and fiscal planning techniques for the fulfillment of the unit's goals and objectives.
  6. Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities.
  7. Ability to integrate resources, policies, and information for the determination of procedures, solutions, and other outcomes.
  8. Ability to communicate effectively -orally, by phone, in person, and in writing.
  • Ability to use a personal computer and other office equipment, including related university software and email.
